The facility located on the old skateboard park adjacent to the arena and wellness centre offers a central location close to other youth activities. The McKay youth group had a clear and thought out vision for their new building and through meetings with Workun Garrick their wish list was incorporated into a state of the art building on this highly visible site in the middle of the community. The new building includes office administration, movie/game theater, computer lab, art room, kitchen, deck, dining area, lounge area, and Recording studio. The facility originally designed with just a Recording studio eventually evolved into Fort McKay’s first community radio station. Joint use between studio spaces allows synergies and economizes the overall The sighting of the building, the use of sun shading, glazing, durable low VOC materials, high efficiency mechanical and lighting just to name a few of the strategies employed to achieve the sustainable building for the youth of today and tomorrow.
